$17,000 Bill for Surgery She Never Had

The woman in this identity theft case did not realize she was a victim until she received a hospital bill for $17,000. The bill was for surgery that she was quite sure she never had. Of course the victim was filled with fear thinking that her credit rating would be ruined after receiving a letter from a Phoenix hospital requesting that she pay up. The victim contacted the hospital and advised that she was never a patient there but the hospital stated that she was responsible because she had provided them with her Social Security number and date of birth when she arrived.

The woman realized she was the victim of identity theft and contacted a news service and the Phoenix Police. Phoenix detectives then arrested a thirty three year old woman who was found to be in the U.S. illegally. The identity thief told the police that she paid a mere $50. for the victims Social Security number and other personal identifying information from a person standing outside a South Phoenix swap mart. The identity thief informed a Phoenix Police Lieutenant that her intention for purchasing the information was to only gain employment.

It was alleged that the woman used the victims Social Security number and date of birth to gain employment at a Phoenix warehouse. But the unexpected happened when the identity thief was injured at her job and whisked off to the hospital for surgery and used the victims personal information. Phoenix Police charged the woman with the felony “fraudulent schemes” after receiving a confession and locked her up.

Imagine the surprise of the victim when she learned the woman was released because prosecutors felt they did not have sufficient evidence for fraudulent schemes. Apparently the immigration authorities were not informed of the illegal alien status of the woman and she just walked herself right out custody.

The news service searched for and found the woman at a South Phoenix trailer park and she stated that all she wanted was employment and that she did not know that the identity she used was that of an actual person. The identity thief said she will try to repay the hospitals $17,000 surgery bill. The news service was persistent with their questions to the authorities as to how this woman was able to simply walk out of jail while being an illegal alien and the woman was eventually re-arrested and charged with identity theft and the immigration authorities were brought into the picture.
